When Mr. Potato Head® was introduced in 1952, you had to supply your own potato! It wasn't until 1964 that a plastic potato was sold with the accessories.

I remember playing with Mr. Potato Head as a child when you actually used a potato! A few years ago at Disney World my daughter and I (who was 20 at the time) had a grand time picking out a Mr. Potato Head and choosing what facial expressions and accessories he had! My cousin Susan had one of the first versions of Mr. Potato Head. Back then it didn't come with a plastic potato. We stuck the eyes, mouth, etc. into a REAL potato. I swear this is true -- or else my family was playing a cruel joke on us! - Marilyn
