My grandfather was a part time painter. When I was seven years old I remember walking up to the front door of his house. I looked through the window of his study and he was painting a landscape. I remember looking at him painting and being struck with the notion that I wanted to paint. My father was a general contractor and would often show his projects to us. He would say "We built that" as we passed a building they had completed. He had a genuine sense of pride and accomplishment about those projects.
"Thinker" is my first interactive playground sculpture. The title is based on the interaction of spinning the head (a metaphor) causing the thinker to think. Thinker is created from a sense of Humor of the heart because the heart knows that without it's help the Thinker is destined to always be manipulated by others/outside influences. Therefore unaware of itself or it's true thought process. The work is made from mortar and steel painted brightly for an active surface of color so a viewer will enjoy turning the head. |
