Sidney the Sea Horse, designed by Kurt Vonnegut, Sr., was the Museum's first logo. 1930 saw the museum's first Prairie Trek and the creation of a Lending Department so that schools that couldn't afford to visit the museum because of the Great Depression would still be able to experience it. In 1932 the Museum's Japanese room opened and remained a popular gallery until World War II. The Children's Museum Guild was established in 1933 to help raise funds for the Museum. Eleanor Roosevelt visited the Children's Museum in 1937 to take a look at the Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects that were underway.
