Who Was Norman Rockwell?

Make a copy of "The Artist's Post" for each student. Students will use "The Artist's Post" to learn about the life and work of Norman Rockwell. Students can make up their own "Ask the Artist " questions and research to find the answers.

Introducing Visual Thinking “Scout Memories”

In this warm-up activity, students will discuss what they see as small portions of the Norman Rockwell painting, “Scout Memories,” are revealed. There are no “wrong” answers, and it is very important that the students do not know the title of the image in advance. To begin, click on one square at a time in a random order. The selected portion of the image will be revealed. Suggested discussion questions are provided below.

As the image is being revealed:

• What is happening in this picture?
• What more can you find?
• What do you see that makes you say that?
• Who do you think this is?

After the picture is revealed:

• What do you think they are talking about?
• Were you right in your prediction?
• What catches your eye in this painting? Why?
• To listen to the story, where would you like to sit in this picture? Why?
• If you were there, what sounds would you hear?
• What smells do you imagine when you look at this painting?
• Imagine what things you could touch with your hands in this painting?
• Are they inside or outside?
• Does this remind you of something you have done?
