Lilly Theatre Technical Supervisor

Reports to: Lilly Theatre Manager

OVERVIEW:
Responsible, in conjunction with Lilly Theatre Manager for overall technical operations of the Lilly Theatre and the maintenance and upkeep of all equipment. Working in tandem with the Exhibits Production team, takes the lead in set construction and maintenance of all Lilly Theatre productions. Oversees the seeking out and supervision of production teams, including lighting, sound, and props, and assists Theatre Manager in negotiating contracts and securing services of designers. Works with Manager and Production Assistant/Stage Manager to lead production meetings. During production, splits board operation/backstage crew duties with Production Assistant/Stage Manager. Serves as primary contact for technical requirements for rentals and special events.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITES:
1. In conjunction with Lilly Theatre Manager, responsible for overall technical operations of Lilly Theatre, including seeking out and supervising designers for lighting, sound, and props, as well as negotiation of contracts and hiring of production design teams.
2. Assumes lead position and building/carpentry responsibilities in construction of all Lilly Theatre productions, working with Exhibit Production on construction, load-in, maintenance and strike of each set.
3. Coordinates production schedule for all technical staff.
4. Takes the lead in hang and focus of lights for each production, based upon the lighting design.
5. Maintains regular contact with stage manager to ensure full knowledge of each production’s needs, including changes to original production plans, and ensures that the technical needs of each production are met.
6. Oversees upkeep of all technical equipment in Lilly Theatre and provides leadership in technical innovations.
7. Maintains an organized, safe and professional physical environment, including the control booth, backstage area, dressing rooms, loft and stage. Maintains inventory and storage of all equipment, props, and set pieces
8. Splits board operation/backstage crew duties with Stage Manager and/or Sound Assistant.
9. Strikes, cleans and stores props and technical equipment of shows on and off-site.
10. Coordinates technical requirements for rentals and events, including set up and strike of equipment, and works with Theatre Manager and Stage Manager to run special events.
11. Develops and maintains design and properties for Lilly Theatre mini-stage for each production.
12. Stands in for Theatre Manager as needed for duties related to the Lilly Theatre.

REQUIREMENTS:
1. BA degree in technical theatre, with a focus on design and construction; or equivalent experience of at least 5 years duration.
2. Experienced carpenter with extensive experience in set construction. Must be able to interpret blueprints for set construction.
3. Experience and working knowledge of technical theatre operations, including but not limited to lighting and sound.
4. Proven track record of team management, delegation, and organization. 
5. Ability to work with a dynamic staff with a variety of backgrounds and professional experiences.
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
7. Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple responsibilities.
8. Excellent problem solving and negotiation skills.
9. Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:
1. Required to view computer monitor, review documents, process paperwork, observe theater performances, make public presentations.
2. Must be able to handle communications by telephone contact, one-on-one conversations, radio contact and public presentations.
3. Heavy use of tool, lifting and moving large set pieces, lights, props and technical equipment. Must negotiate catwalk and lighting grid and be comfortable working in tight spaces and at heights.  Ability to climb and work from ladders.
4. Required to negotiate stairs and sit/stand for extended periods of time.
