Famed Egyptologist Visits
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (In conjunction with the grand opening of National Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure)
WHO / WHAT:
A renowned explorer featured in the newest exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, National Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure is Dr. Zahi Hawass, who has worked as an archaeologist and Egyptologist for nearly 40 years. A National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence, Hawass is Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. One of the most well-known archaeologists in the world, Hawass has been responsible for many major discoveries, including finding the tombs of pyramid builders, unearthing more than 200 Greco-Roman mummies and exploring the Great Pyramid of Giza. He has also championed restoration efforts at the Sphinx.
Hawass has appeared on numerous network television specials, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel and the National Geographic Channel and in magazines as both a diplomat and scientist. He is a passionate speaker, and his joy in discovery and pride in his history are apparent. Hawass was recently named as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.

Dr. Hawass will visit in conjunction with the grand opening of National Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure. Prompted by the alarming lack of geographic knowledge among our nation’s young people and the pressing need to protect the planet’s natural resources, the world’s largest children’s museum and the world’s most recognized map experts have joined forces to develop this extraordinary learning experiencethat will debut on Oct. 14.
