This year celebrates the 24th year of The Prelude Awards — a dynamic and comprehensive program about learning in and though the arts that celebrates, recognizes and supports creative expression and artistic excellence of high-school youth throughout Marion County.

The Competition
The Prelude Awards is designed to provide exceptional learning experiences to help young people to develop competencies in the following areas:

  • Communication
  • Creative Expression
  • Critical Thinking and Learning
  • Leadership
  • Multicultural Awareness and Appreciation
  • Resource Development
  • Team Building
  • Technical Ability

Competitions will be held for individual participants in the categories of creative writing, video/film, visual arts, dance, instrumental music, theater, vocal music and collaboration (a category that demonstrates a group’s ability to master artistic expression and communication through an arts discipline, two to five individuals may participate in the collaboration category).

Guidelines
Each participant or team must have an adult mentor sponsoring their application and submission packet information. All entrants must be of high school-age, grades 9-12, reside or attend High School in Marion County, and must have demonstrated artistic ability and accomplishment in their chosen category.
The deadline for all submission application forms to be delivered to The Children’s Museum is November 5, 2007, at 5 p.m. No exceptions will be made to the deadline date.

Selection Criteria
A panel of judges in each of the arts categories is comprised of professional artists, arts executives, college deans and professors throughout the Midwest. The panel will review all of the submitted written materials and presentations for outstanding achievement. See General Requirements and Criteria for each area of discipline.

Competition Schedule
Preliminary Round
Once submission packets are received and approved, entrants will be notified of their presentation time and location via postcard. The preliminary round of presentations will be held at Butler University, Jordan College of Fine Arts on Jan. 5, 2008. All entrants are required to be present at the designated time. Any missed appointments will result in disqualification.

Semifinal Round
Qualifying artists from the Preliminary Rounds will be invited to participate in the Semifinals to be held at Butler University, Jordan College of Fine Arts on Jan. 6. Please keep this date available on your calendar.

Final Competition
The top four participants in each of the arts categories will be invited to participate in the Final Competition on Jan. 26 in Lilly Theater at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Winning Participants will be recognized and honored at the 2008 Prelude awards celebration dinner, Feb. 8, 2008.

Note: All qualifying finalists will be notified by January 10, 2008.

The Awards
Scholarships will be awarded to winners in each of the arts categories and are to be applied to the tuition of the college, university of higher-education school of their choice. All scholarships awarded must be used within five years of high school graduation.

First Place Scholarship Award $1,000
Second Place Prelude Scholarship Award $250

Sponsoring high schools of a first place winner from one of the eight categories will receive an award of $500 from the museum in recognition of their outstanding arts education program. The award is intended to support and advance arts education initiatives in Marion County schools. The museum is forging partnerships with other institutions of higher education to offer university specific scholarships.

The Kightlinger and Gray, LLP Outstanding Art Educator Award will be given to two Marion County educators for their exceptional commitment to encouraging and supporting young people in the arts.
