PREDATORS

Keen eyesight, sharp claws and swiftness of foot are just some of the characteristics that you might see in a predatory animal. What different characteristic might an animal need if it were stalking wildebeest, fishing in a stream, or slurping up red ants?

On the African Savannah, the lion is the top predator - the king of the beasts. This is one animal that is well adapted for catching prey. Notice how the eye sockets are set forward in its skull to enhance its stereoscopic vision. This makes it easier for it to spot its next meal. You can also see its massive jaws and the ridge-like muscle attachments that run from its jaw to the back of its neck. The African lion is a predator that can deliver a very forceful bite!
