Discovering Chimpanzees:
The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall

Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall An unparalleled study of behavioral science and natural history unfolds as visitors enter Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall. Four interactive exhibit areas cover Goodall’s 40-year study to present some of her most original and thought-provoking ideas on chimpanzees and primates in general.Jane Goodall talking with a friend.

Families will share a unique experience in the following main areas of the exhibit — The Chimp Forest, The Work of Jane Goodall, Primates, and a Reason for Hope; each area gives visitors multiple opportunities to investigate the life of Jane Goodall and the world of chimpanzees.

Chimps
This simulated jungle-scape allows visitors to enter the world of the African chimp. As the centerpiece of the exhibit, the Chimps area includes:
A treetop nest that children can climb into, and learn how chimps spend their nights high in the trees
A vocalization booth where visitors can learn to talk like a chimp
A chimp “gym” where kids can hang and climb on bars, making comparisons between chimp and human arm strength and other characteristics
A termite mound where visitors can emulate the ‘termite fishing’ behavior of chimps
Exhibits about chimp family structure, alpha male dominance, and the remarkable genealogy of elderly Gombe matriarchs, such as Fifi.

The Jane Goodall Story
A re-creation of Goodall’s small home in Gombe takes visitors through her lifelong study, using her field notes, photographs, video clips and other artifacts. The longest-running natural history project in the world comes to life in this area, revealing how — with much patience — Goodall built a relationship of trust and respect with her subjects unparalleled in the history of behavioral sciences.Primates

Primates
Chimpanzees are members of a very large and familiar family — the primate family. This area of the exhibit explains primate evolution and connects chimpanzees with other primates including apes, gorillas, orangutans and even humans.

The Future
Through Goodall’s long experience in Africa, her relationship with the chimps evolved from one of strictly scientific interest to one of devotion and a firm commitment to chimpanzee survival. This area of the exhibit demonstrates the successful initiatives of individuals who have taken action to deal with environmental and societal issues. Be inspired by Goodall’s life-size video image and her message of hope for the future.
