Teaching Tolerance Through
Children’s Picture Books

March 2 – Aug. 6

Have you ever wanted to go on an adventure just like the characters in your favorite book? Now you can participate in activities from classic children’s books including “Enemy Pie,” “It’s Okay to be Different,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “The Cat in the Hat.” With original illustrations and activities from more than 40 stories, you can become a part of your favorite tale! Climb into the tree house from “Enemy Pie,” play musical instruments from “Rip Squeak and His Friends,” or explore new cafeteria foods from “David Goes to School.” While you’re there, dress up and dance like the characters in “Tallchief, and transform yourself into a Starbelly Sneetch from Dr. Seuss’ “The Sneetches.”

Every Picture Tells a Story also features a variety of everyday artifacts from around the world (such as games and clothing) which make each of us unique, yet bring us together. Your family will discover that everyone plays games and sports — sometimes they simply look a little different. Play a game of hopscotch together, or take a closer look at game pieces from other countries. (You’ll find that even dance and music vary from person to person!) Children will enjoy twirling around a real dance floor like prima ballerina Maria Tallchief and pounding on bongo drums. They’ll also see beautiful dance costumes from different cultures, including a traditional China Poblana outfit from Mexico and a West African drummer’s clothing.

This exhibit wouldn’t be complete without taking the time to find out the stories behind the pictures, so we invite you and your family to curl up in the reading area and read a book together. What are you waiting for? Join us at The Children’s Museum as we support literacy, explore the illustrations in our favorite childhood storybooks and learn to understand and celebrate our differences!
