Moneyville May 29, 2004 - Jan. 2, 2005 Money isn’t just dollars and cents. The ancient Aztecs used chocolate for money and Yap Islanders used 500-pound stones! So what is money and how does it work? Now visitors of all ages can explore the history, science and culture behind money in Moneyville. This new, highly interactive temporary exhibit immerses visitors in the familiar and fascinating subject of money to build math skills and promote economic literacy in a fun environment. Visitors enter Moneyville and embark on an exciting hands-on tour through a money factory, an anti-counterfeiting lab, a bank, a shopping district, a stock market and an international shipping dock. As participants engage in games and simulations, they discover economic concepts, math skills and problem-solving strategies that can help them in real-life decisions. Exhibit content meets national math and economics standards. Activities:The Money Factory Explore the history, science and technology behind money. Follow its evolution from the earliest coins to e-commerce and investigate the barter system. See how money is made today and make your own "money." Discover security measures used in U.S. currency as you work with high-tech tools to distinguish real money from counterfeit. In the Kids Market, younger children can sort, count, group, weigh and buy goods using play money, cash registers and produce scales.
