Raise the Roof
Every Building Has a Story

Raise the Roof!If walls could talk, what would they say? Would they reveal secrets and surprises? What kinds of extraordinary engineering feats would they bring to light? If walls could talk, they might say, "Humans spend 90 percent of their lives within buildings. It's time they get to know us." Raise the Roof!, is open from Sept. 27, 2003 to Jan. 11, 2004 at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, is your blueprint to uncover the stories behind the fascinating structures.

Discover the story of construction science. Visitors who Raise the Roof! are encouraged to investigate the architecture and engineering that goes into starting building projects, as well as maintaining them through the years. Understand how air flows through a structure, learn the tricks of making a skyscraper stand tall, and even raise the roof of a real-life dome.

Dig even deeper into structural thought and consider how buildings tell stories of our human creativity and culture. Step into a life-size Mongolian ger, a house as portable as a tent, but as sturdy as a conventional home. Examine the innovative ancient door panels from eastern China, which are held together with no nails or screws.
