Making Faces: Make-up in Chinese Opera

In Chinese Opera, each style of facial make-up tells the audience something about the personality of the character wearing it. Different colors mean different things. When Chinese opera first began 700 years ago, masks were worn. Later, the designs were painted onto the face, a detailed practice that takes several hours.

Click on a mask and use the colors to see what its telling you about the character who wore it.
