What is theatre?
What is theatre? Theatre is a story that comes alive. It's tragedy, comedy, mystery and more. Theatre is plays, ballets, opera, musicals, dance, pantomime, the circus and even live sporting events.
Who does theatre?
Many people. Theatre is a craft that requires lots of people with different talents. It includes:
  • The playwright takes an idea or story he wants to share with an audience and turns it into a script (a play using dialogue.).
  • The director coordinates all the artistic elements of the play, schedules rehearsals, and directs and coaches the actors. The director interprets the script, designs the stage movements for the characters, selects the actors and guides their dialogue and action.
  • The stage manager coordinates all the production's elements and ensures that communication is clear between the design team and the director. The stage manager makes sure that everyone is doing his or her job during rehearsals.
  • The actors bring the characters to life onstage as they perform the script.
  • The set designer researches and designs sets and scenery for the play.
  • The costume designer creates costumes for the different characters in the play.
  • Makeup artists design stage makeup and hairstyles for actors.
  • The sound designer chooses and designs the sound effects for the play.
  • The lighting designer uses light, shape and color when designing lights for a play.
  • The running crew backstage shifts scenery and assists the actors with putting on their costumes.
  • The light board operator runs the lights during the performance.
  • The soundboard operator runs the sound during the performance.
  • Publicity lets the community know about the play to attract an audience.

Why do they do it?
People do theatre to entertain, communicate and educate.

Where do they do it?
Where is theatre performed? Many places. It can be performed in a theatre building, onstage, outside, in a garage, in a home, in a factory, on the street, in an arena, in a field, almost anywhere.
