Studio Of Colors

Studio Of Colors
Reserve your spot online now and you will be contacted within 24 hours to complete your registration.

As you read through these station descriptions, please keep in mind that this program has been designed for families to learn and interact together.

You Design It
Did you know that Dale Chihuly, while a fabulous artist, begins designing his glass pieces simply by drawing or painting his ideas on paper? Learn more about Chihuly as an artist and practice one of his techniques by drawing with chalk or painting a design on special paper.

Hot Shop
Hot' shop', n.—A glass working studio containing a furnace, glory hole and glass blowing team. Families can step into our mock Hot Shop to see some glassblowers' tools and learn about the studio in which glass art is created. Families are invited to match the tool with its name and try to "gather glass" and keep it on a "punty."

What's In Your Collection?
Dale Chihuly collects many types of things. Families can work together to write about things they collect. View some artifacts from the museum's own collection that can't be seen anywhere else.

Shape Scape
What do macchias, seaforms and baskets all have in common? In the glass world, they are some of Dale Chihuly's titles for very eye-catching art! Families create their own versions of these 3-D forms using the closest thing we could find to glass (transparency film) and "safe" heat from a heat gun to form sculptures. We use heat guns for this activity, so adult supervision is a must!

Balloon Sculpture
Have you seen the Fireworks of Glass sculpture by renowned artist Dale Chihuly at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis? Families can join in the fun as they try to create their own curly, colored, twisty art pieces out of balloons! Then, by adding each piece to an armature just like Chihuly's team did, we hope to leave a sculpture at your school that is similar to our museum sculpture. NOTE: This activity uses latex balloons. Please remind families who may have latex allergies to avoid this activity.

A Touch Of Glass
Families can pick up a Glass Explorer's worksheet to capture their thoughts about the properties of glass, after they've had a chance to actually touch the stuff. Grab a flashlight to explore how light may change pieces of glass and learn about a few types of "natural glass."

Investigation and Recreation
Need a break from the busy evening? Families can plop down on our comfy seats and thumb through pages full of colorful glass art, learn about the history of glass art and learn even more about Dale Chihuly! Families can put together some plastic sculptures using a building toy called Oli Blocks.

Presentations:
Cooking with Glass

Take part in this interactive demonstration that compares a batch of fudge to a batch of glass. Families will learn what ingredients are in a batch of clear glass and may get to help the chef "pour" ingredients into the mixing bowl. Presentation is at 7 p.m.

Chihuly Video:
The next best thing to reading about Chihuly is actually seeing him and his team at work to create glass art. This video will show work being done in the hot shop and take families on a journey around the world to see several of Chihuly's installations. Video begins at 6:30 p.m. and runs the rest of the evening.
