Make Your Own Root Beer
To do this experiment, you will need:
- Clean, 2-liter plastic soft drink bottle with cap
- Funnel
- 1 cup measuring cup
- 1/4 tsp. and 1 Tbls. measuring spoons
- 1 cup cane (table) sugar [sucrose]
- 1 Tbls. root beer extract
- 1/4 tsp. powdered baker's yeast
- Cold, fresh water - preferably filtered to minimize chlorine content (to fill up the 2 liter bottle)
Procedure:
- Using the funnel, add the sugar.
- Using the funnel, add the yeast.
- Shake the bottle to evenly distribute the yeast in the sugar. After shaking, be sure the mixture settles down into the bottom of the bottle.
- Using the funnel, add the root beer extract.
- Using the funnel, fill the bottle half way with water, being sure to rinse into the bottle the root beer extract that stuck to the measuring spoon and the funnel. Swirl to dissolve the ingredients.
- Using the funnel, fill the bottle up to the neck with water. Place the cap on the bottle and invert it repeatedly to fully dissolve all the ingredients.
- Place at room temperature for three to four days, until the bottle feels hard, then move it to a cool place. Be careful! If you leave it too long in a warm place, the bottle can explode.
- Be sure to place the root beer in the refrigerator the night before you decide to open it.
