Berenstain, Jan and Stan. The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food. New York: Random House, Inc., 1985.
As a great introduction to good nutrition and exercise for young students, Mama Bear lays down the law when she notices that Papa and the cubs are getting too chubby. With the help of Dr. Grizzly's slide show on how the body works, the Bear family makes a healthful adjustment in their diet and fitness habits.


Carlson, Nancy. Get Up and Go! New York: (Viking) Penguin Young Readers Group, 2006.
This is a preschool to early education book which sends a message about the fun of exercise. This upbeat book has a positive message and great colored pencil artwork. Most pages have heart healthy facts that run across the top which correspond with the encouraging text below.

   

D'Amico, Joan and Karen Eich Drummond. The Science Chef; 100 Fun Food Experiments and Recipes for Kids. New York: John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1995.
A great book for elementary-age students or for teachers who are looking to use experiments with their younger students. Each chapter begins with an experiment of some sort, followed by a brief explanation of what happened as well as an illustration of the concept. Recipes range in skill level from no experience to some experience and are made fun.

Keener M.D., Patricia. Caring for Kids, Useful information and Hard to Find Facts about Child Health and Development. Indianapolis, Indiana: James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association, 2001.
An annual book provided by the Riley Hospital for Children for parents about health education. It contains thousands of interesting facts, useful information and listings of resources for parents. Child health care, growth and development, nutrition and child safety are all covered in great detail.

   

Miller, Edward. The Monster Health Book, A Guide to Eating Healthy, Being Active and Feeling Great for Monsters and Kids! New York, New York: Holiday House, 2006.
A lively and visually appealing book written for kids in grades 2 – 5, it features a friendly, rotund, green monster determined to make healthy choices. This book presents basic information about food, exercise and health. Each topic is introduced in one or two paragraphs; additional facts appear in boxes, sidebars, lists and diagrams. An impressive list of Web sites provides additional resources which are also available.
