Treasures of the Earth:
Hands-on Archaeology Institute
For Teachers Grades 3-8
Learn about the museum’s newest permanent exhibit, National Geographic Treasures of the Earth, and its three featured sites: the tomb of Seti I, the Terra Cotta Warriors of China, and the underwater shipwreck of the Cara Merchant, commandeered by Captain Kidd. Join IUPUI archaeologists and help excavate an 1830s archaeological site with an important role in Indiana history. Experience the work of archaeologists beyond the field by processing artifacts and traveling to other Indiana digs. This institute lasts for six days, with one day at the museum for orientation and five days off-site.

Dominican Republic Archaeology Expedition
Grades 3–8

Join museum staff on an expedition to the Dominican Republic to visit the resting place of the Cara Merchant, Captain Kidd’s famous last ship. Meet Indiana University Professor Charles Beeker and see underwater archaeology in action. Learn about the important work being done by Indiana University to preserve the Cara Merchant shipwreck site as an underwater sanctuary. Explore the places where American colonial history began, from the time of the native Taino people to the golden age of piracy, and visit the Dominican Republic’s national archaeology lab to learn about efforts to preserve the country’s amazing archaeological heritage.

Dates: Sunday–Saturday, July 1–7, 2102
Fee: $1,200 per person (based on double occupancy)
Fee includes lodging, most meals, ground transportation in the Dominican Republic, and equipment rental. Fee does not include transportation costs to the Dominican Republic. A $100 nonrefundable down payment is required at the time of registration. For more
