Museum Apprentice Program
Application Packet

Welcome to your first step on the road to the Museum Apprentice Program at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis! We are pleased that you are interested in joining our team. Please take your time with this application! Remember that every question is important, so leave nothing blank. Also, please type all information. If you have questions about the application process, please contact us.

What is MAP?
MAP stands for Museum Apprentice Program. MAP is a project based program opportunity for youth ages 12 - 16. Youth work closely with staff, teachers, adult volunteers and other youth participants on projects that relate to museum exhibits, activities and internal programs. Youth work on one major project per year, and also spend time sharing knowledge with children and families. Upon acceptance to the program, youth are considered active as long as they maintain their commitments or until they graduate high school.

What makes MAP different from other youth programs?
MAP is a project-based program. This means that our primary focus is not volunteer work in the museum, but rather learning about the museum by creating projects. Past projects have included: plays in Lilly Theater, preparation of bones for Dinosphere®, the redesign of The Children’s Museum garden and more! Staff work hard to provide participants with background information, contact with experts and guidance through the projects.

What is expected of youth in the program?
The MAP is a year-round program. We expect all youth to maintain contact with the program throughout the year. Youth are expected to commit to a minimum of two days at the museum every month. Participants must also commit to:

  1. an intensive six-week summer session from 9 - 5 p.m. on Fridays and 1 - 5 p.m. on Saturdays
  2. two Saturdays a month for research and development in the spring
  3. two Saturdays a month for professional development workshops and interpretation opportunities in the fall.
The last page of this application includes a checklist that will further explain the expectations of the program.
