Service Learning Opportunity
Purpose: To provide an educational/ mentoring experience to junior and senior high school youth in need of a volunteer opportunity because of a class requirement.
Guidelines:
- Must be a junior or senior in high school and at least 16 years old
- Volunteer opportunity is for one semester, through a “service learning” or “learning unlimited” type education class
- The Adult Volunteer Center will serve as the administrative base for the volunteers and coordinate the supervision, placement, volunteer work and schedules
- Each of the volunteers must have the following:
- Interview conducted by a member of the Volunteer Services staff prior to consideration of placement
- Student Application Form
- An emergency medical form on file
- Signed permission forms from TCM supervising staff member, youth, parent or legal guardian, and high school counselor or classroom teacher in charge of the assigned volunteer work
- Youth must sign in and out at Hedback and on the Volunteer Works computer in the Adult Volunteer Center
- Youth must have a specific schedule of hours and days to be in the museum
- Youth must be supervised and mentored by a responsible staff member willing to work under the guidelines of “constant” supervision, follow up and accountability of the youth.
- The new high school volunteer must go through Day One processing and some form of orientation to learn about TCM procedures.
- Evaluations of the youth and supervisor will be conducted at least once a month for the duration of the volunteer’s term.
- Existing museum guidelines for transporting youth must be followed.
- A “Shadow Experience” is also under the above guidelines but limited to one (1) day.
- Summer Service Learning experiences may be available on a limited basis for a period of up to two (2) weeks only.
