Boys and girls, young and old, you have a milestone to help celebrate – the toy soldier considered to be the world’s first action figure is 50!
Happy Birthday, G.I. Joe!
There is no doubt the “moveable fighting man” as he was first advertised, remains popular today.
During the summer of 2012,The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis hosted an online poll to determine the most popular toy of the last 100 years. A list of the top 100 toys was whittled down to 20. After eight weeks of voting, more than 24,000 votes and 600 stories shared, the final results determined the voters’ favorite toy from the 20th century was G.I. Joe!
Through the decades, G.I. Joe has endured many changes. His size has changed. His uniforms have changed. He has been the star of movies, cartoons and comic books. G. I. Joe is an important part of the American Collection at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Interested media are invited to take a special behind-the-scenes tour and see the collection during this February celebration.
