ScienceWorks Top 10—The Water Table

Ask any hydrologist and they’ll tell you, “Water is all around us!”—in lakes, rivers, oceans, the clouds, our pipes at home, and even in our bodies! Water makes up 71% of the Earth’s surface, and science and engineering have helped us harness this natural resource for transportation, shipping, power generation, and more. In the reinvented Dow AgroSciences ScienceWorks, we’ve created an interactive water system to exemplify the variety of ways we use water—from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi Delta!

Here are all the cool things the Water Table can teach your family:

  • Great Lakes Boat Play - Load, transport, and  unload “cargo” on Lake Michigan. Learn how The Great Lakes and the Mississippi basin are important resources for transporting supplies and people.
  • Starved Rock Locks - Engineer a lock system to raise or lower water levels to help boats down the river.
  • Cannelton Dam - Discover the appropriate balance between water pressure and energy generated by experimenting with dam gates.
  • Arkansas Wetlands - Compare flood patterns in wetland areas as a hydrologist. Understand how human development creates flood risk between wetlands and paved, urban surfaces.
  • New Orleans Levees and Delta - Create levees to protect New Orleans from flooding, and experiment with sediment and sandbars to alter water movement.

Thanks to scientists using technology, engineering, math, chemistry, and other tools, we can create and improve systems of water around the world—from the ocean to the kitchen sink! Do your part in working the water flow in ScienceWorks!

The reinvention of ScienceWorks is made possible by the generous support of Dow AgroSciences through The Dow Chemical Company Foundation.
