Let’s Make Some WAVEs

We believe children can make lasting change. They can help transform their homes and communities. Children can change the world. We believe this is most powerfully communicated in our permanent exhibit The Power of Children: Making a Difference®. In this interactive exhibit, you encounter the lives of three children who left a mark on the world—Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White. We’re excited that Malala Yousafzai’s story will be added to The Power of Children® in Sept. 2021.

With Diary of a Young Girl, Anne’s words changed the world. Those words continue to challenge us to treat everyone with dignity and respect. As a first-grader, Ruby used the power of action to change the world when walked into Warren Frank Elementary School. Ryan used his voice in the media to stand up against ignorance, fear-mongering, and misinformation. Malala continues to use her education to stand up for the basic human rights of girls around the world.

When you combine their stories—words, action, voice, education—you have a WAVE. Throughout history, these WAVEs have helped change communities. We believe you can make WAVEs, too. And we’re here to help.

Over the next few months leading up to the opening of Malala’s area in The Power of Children®, we’ll share some ideas of what your family can do to begin making WAVEs in your home, neighborhood, and around the world. Here’s what you can expect:

June 1: Anne’s Story—Use Your Words
July 1: Ruby’s Story—Take Action
August 1: Ryan’s Story—Raise Your Voice
Sept. 1: Malala’s Story—Stand For Education

Anne, Ruby, Ryan, and Malala remind us that children have the power to make a difference. They challenge us to add our stories. Let’s join them in making WAVEs, pointing to the hope of a better future.
