Frequently Asked Questions

Event FAQsWe know a lot goes into planning an event. Here are some of the most common questions. If there’s anything else we can answer for you, get in touch at eventrentals@childrensmuseum.org or 317-334-3800.

1. When do events start and end?

Events typically begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. End times can be extended for an additional hourly charge. Daytime event spaces are also available during open public hours. Museum passes are included for your guests’ enjoyment.

Setup: You may begin setting up after the museum closes at 5 p.m. First Thursdays of every month are not available for event rental due to extended public hours.
Vendors: Your vendors can unload after 4 p.m. at the loading dock and will be allowed into public spaces beginning at 5 p.m.
Tear down: You must tear down immediately after the event due to the museum’s weekly hours.

2. What’s included with facility rental?

Tables and chairs for up to 350 guests, complimentary garage parking, coat check, security, limited AV, and gallery staffing (for contracted museum exhibits).

In addition to galleries, a variety of amenities can be added to your event's agenda. Let our Event Team know if you are interested in paleontology labs or extended hours at the Museum Store.

3. What type of deposit is needed to hold our space?

At the time of signing the contract, a 50% rental deposit is due. The remaining rental balance is due two weeks prior to your event.

4. What type of event insurance do I need, and where can I obtain it?

You will need a one-day comprehensive general public liability insurance policy from a licensed insurance carrier.

5. What décor items are allowed?

You are welcome to bring most décor items, with the exception of helium balloons, fog machines, loud air pumps, or anything of that nature. The event production manager can provide a more comprehensive list.

6. Where can my guests park?

Parking is always free and included in your event rental. There is a covered parking garage with an enclosed skywalk into the museum, as well as multiple surface lots.

7. Are we allowed to use an outside caterer?

Sodexo is the exclusive in-house caterer of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Our chef can customize your menu for any special event. View our Catering Policies.
