As the icing on top of our 100th birthday cake, The Children’s Museum celebrated with a BIG present – a 60-foot-long Birthday Bus!

On May 6, The Children’s Museum and IndyGo held an “unwrapping” party for the Birthday Bus – covered in a centennial year design – and took 100+ birthday cake kits along on its inaugural ride to donate to the Mid-North Food Pantry.

Covered in 16 rolls of birthday-themed wrapping paper and a giant bow on top, the Birthday Bus was then unwrapped by The Children’s Museum staff, President and CEO Jennifer Pace Robinson, and mascot Rex, revealing its centennial design.

"We are thrilled to debut our centennial year Birthday Bus in partnership with IndyGo,” said Robinson. “IndyGo's bus routes link our community neighborhoods across Indianapolis and make it easier for families to access the joy and fun we offer. The Birthday Bus symbolizes our commitment to creating powerful learning experiences to children in every corner of Indy, and we can't wait to see the smiles it brings as it travels through the city!"

You can’t miss the 60-foot-long Birthday Bus as it travels by—it's on both the Red and Purple Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, and it will pass by The Children’s Museum multiple times daily! There’s even a convenient stop on 30th and Meridian, right outside of the museum, for families to easily board and exit the bus.

“The Children’s Museum is an Indianapolis institution, and what better way to celebrate the museum’s 100th birthday than with a fun centennial design covering one of our BRT buses spreading birthday cheer throughout the city,” said Jennifer Pyrz, president and CEO of IndyGo. “We are incredibly proud to partner with such a beloved organization as they showcase their historic milestone on some of our most visible transit lines.”

After the grand unwrapping, staff members from The Children’s Museum, IndyGo and Acorn Distributors rode the Birthday Bus to the 34th and Meridian stop to hand deliver 104 birthday cake kits to the Mid-North Food Pantry.

At food pantries, birthday cake ingredients are not a necessity and therefore are not often donated.

The Children’s Museum is proud to bring a pop of joy for families by providing birthday cake ingredients to families to make birthdays extra special. Now through Dec. 6, the museum is asking for donations of shelf-stable birthday cake ingredients, including boxes of cake mix, cans of icing, and candles so they can continue to send birthday cake kits to food pantries across Indianapolis.

The Birthday Bus is available to ride on the red and purple lines now until Aug. 17. Hop on board soon so you don’t miss it!
