How One Donor’s Carousel Memory Became a Gift of Joy

How One Donor’s Carousel Memory Became a Gift of Joy

September 2025 · Back to stories

When Larry Geddes walks through The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, he doesn’t just see exhibits—he sees magic. From the Alamosaurus family bursting out of the museum and on to Street, to the whimsical ball machine, and the vibrant Chihuly Fireworks of Glass sculpture, Larry sees a place where imagination and craftsmanship come together to spark joy in every child and adult who walks through the doors.

Larry’s connection to the museum began with a visit in high school, but it deepened when he became a donor in the late 2000s. “I’ve always been impressed with the exhibits,” he says. “The train, the sports areas, the Carousel—it’s all just pure magic. And the kids love it. The parents love it. Everyone leaves with a smile.”

That joy is what inspired Larry to honor his parents with a Carousel horse at the museum. Larry sees this as an opportunity to give back in a meaningful way.

“I’ve worked hard all my life,” Larry says. “And I’ve been blessed. I wanted to do something that would help young kids—who are so impressionable—have a place where they can create lasting memories.”

Celebrating Craftsmanship and Artistry

For Larry, the Carousel is more than just a ride. It’s a symbol of timeless joy and craftsmanship. “Each carousel has its own story,” he explains. “They’re not just merry-go-rounds. They’re sophisticated, artistic creations. The music, the atmosphere—it all stays with you.”

Though Larry doesn’t have children of his own, he’s the oldest of ten siblings and knows the value of shared experiences. “Seeing the kids having a blast here—it’s worth every second,” he says. “And the parents get to relive their own childhoods through their children’s joy.”

Inspiring Future Visitors

Supporting the museum is a source of pride for Larry. “Every time I visit, I see families leaving the Skywalk, still jubilant. That’s what makes me feel good about where my hard-earned work has gone.” He continued,

Larry Geddes quote that says, "Every time I come in, I’m just so impressed… the kids are having a blast. What better way to help the museum than to be part of that joy?”

Through his support, Geddes hopes to inspire future visitors to see that their contributions can help the museum create and present exhibits that "inspire everyone who attends, not only children but people of all ages." He feels he's in a good place, knowing that his generosity helps create joy and memories for generations to come.
