A Grown-Up’s Guide to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have inspired generations since 1984! If you need a refresher on the Turtles’ origin story, this guide will help you be prepared before you visit the exhibit, Secrets of the Sewer!

The story begins with Hamato Yoshi, a Japanese ninja living in exile in New York City. One day he goes to the pet store and buys four baby turtles. On his way home, he finds himself in a fight with what appears to be a group of men, but they are actually alien Kraang in disguise!

The Kraang splashed Yoshi and his baby turtles with a mutagen chemical called Ooze, and they were transformed. Ooze combined Yoshi’s DNA with DNA from a rat that crawled up his leg during the fight, and Yoshi became Splinter.

Ooze transformed the turtles and made them stronger than almost any creature on Earth.

Splinter became a father to the four young turtles and hid them from the world until they could protect themselves.

They retreated to the New York City sewers where Splinter taught Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo the martial art of ninjutsu.

Once they became teenagers, the Turtles emerged to the streets of New York to fight crime and aliens.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never run out of adventures because they have foes like Shredder, the Kraang, and mutants created by the Ooze!
