Museum at Home: Get Active!
Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience® Director Caleb Bailey shares some fun activities you can do outside to get your body moving and your blood pumping.
Warm Up: Land, Sea, Air
All you need is a line for this game. You can use a crack in the sidewalk, sidewalk chalk, or put down some tape. One side of the line is “Land” the other side is “Sea." “Air” players will jump in the air as high as they can.
The leader will call out “Land," "Sea," or "Air” for a certain period of time.
Game 1: Snakes and Worms
Approximately 20 feet of different colored yarn per player. Cut the 20 feet of yarn into 20 equal pieces.
Place all of the pieces in various spaces of your play space. Spread them out as much as possible. If you are inside, you can hide pieces of yarn throughout different rooms in your house. Just tell everyone to use their walking feet! Each time they bring a piece back to tie they need to do 10 line hops or 10 jumping jacks before they go find the next piece.
You can do teams like kids vs. grown-ups or sisters vs. brothers, or any other combination. Once the leader says "Go," one player from the team runs to find a snake or a worm (cut up pieces of yarn) and brings it to their teammate to tie them together. The team with the longest snake or worm at the end of the time wins.
- If you only have two people, one person can be the runner and the other person can tie the pieces together and then switch. You can do two rounds and see if you can beat your previous best.
- If you have younger ones who cannot tie, simply have them line them up on the ground to look like a snake or a worm.
Game 2: Legendary Flag Tag
Two long socks or bandannas per player.
Set a defined boundary (20’x20’).
One player will be the tagger, while the other players will be the runners. The tagger will chase the runners and pull one of their flags. The tagger will place their flag on the ground. If both flags are pulled you can do 10 line hops to get back in. Game is continuous.
