Big, Bad, Bizarre, Fantastic Dinosaur Art for Your Viewing and Interactive Pleasure!

More than a dozen artists bring dinos to life in The Children’s Museum's newest exhibit Big, Bad & Bizarre.

Dinosaurs!  We’ve never seen them alive; yet, we have a good idea of what the behemoths looked like as they roamed, roared and fought for their survival.  Our impressions come from the work of paleontologists, artists and a combination of the two working together to study fossils, other clues from the earth, and even modern day animals to hypothesize how the prehistoric beasts appeared and behaved.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has one of the largest displays of real dinosaur fossils in the United States.  As the museum prepares to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Dinosphere in 2014, visitors may now explore and imagine the Cretaceous Period 65 million years ago in one of the nation’s biggest, best and unique galleries of dinosaur art.  The Mann Properties Gallery Featuring the Lanzendorf Collection of Dinosaur Imagery includes new paleo paintings, sculptures and dinosaur-inspired activities for young, budding artists.

The Children’s Museum calls its newest exhibit Big, Bad & Bizarre, for short.  More than a dozen artists bring dinos to life by visualizing their big, bad armor, big, bad teeth, big bodies, and bizarre head ornamentation and colors.

Featured artist Luis V. Rey, is a Spanish-Mexican artist and illustrator well-known for his anatomical reconstructions of animals and their habitats.  Rey believes that birds are not only direct descendants of dinosaurs, but are living dinosaurs. That is why he reconstructs dinosaurs with feathers if the skeletal anatomy and size of the animal suggests it was possible.

“This is yet another way the world’s largest children’s museum is able to ignite imaginations and develop creativity as we display our vast collection of artifacts and art,” said Dr. Jeffrey H. Patchen, president and CEO, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “This impressive paleo art collection continues to enthrall visitors and brings new scientific insight and artistic perspective to our prehistoric world.”

Big, Bad & Bizarre provides young artists, excited by the world of dinosaurs, opportunities to put their imaginations to work drawing, sculpting, and creating their own versions of the extraordinary mammoth creatures.

The exhibit opens to the public Saturday, September 21, 2013.
