Enjoy Free Admission at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 95th Birthday

WHO: Visitors will receive FREE ADMISSION Monday, January 15, 2024
WHAT: Join us to celebrate the life, achievements and legacy of Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King would have celebrated his 95th birthday in 2024. His actual birth date was January 15, 1929.  
WHERE: The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, 3000 N. Meridian Street 
WHEN: Monday, January 15, 2024, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The museum is typically closed on Mondays through February but will be open during this Monday holiday.  

DETAILS: Enjoy special performances and activities celebrating Dr. King’s life and Black history that are woven throughout interactive galleries and exhibits at the world’s largest children’s museum.   

  • Eli Lilly and Company Visiting Scientist: Robot Hand in the Corteva Agriscience STEMLab
    Times: 10:45 and 11:45 a.m., 1:45, 3 & 3:45 p.m.
    Use simple materials with Eli Lilly and Company Visiting Scientist Carlotta Berry to build a functioning model hand. Take your robot hand home and show it off! 
  • Griot Drum Ensemble Performances in Lilly Theater 
    Times: 11:30 and 1:30 p.m.
    Enjoy energetic and engaging percussion music as the Griot Drum Ensemble performs authentic traditional West African and Diaspora drumming.
  • Words of Inspiration in Gathering Room A
    Times: 12:30 and 2 p.m.
    Join resident storyteller Portia Jackson as she leads reflection and discussion on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Visiting Artist Ess McKee in Program Room 101
    Times: 1 and 2 p.m.
    Explore the art of printmaking with 2023–24 Visiting Artist Ess McKee. What makes a print a print? How many ways can you create one? In this program, you will create personal prints using one or more of a variety of printmaking methods. Stamping, stenciling, screen printing, and more—what fun things will you make?
  • Ruby Sound and Light Show in The Power of Children exhibit
    Times: 10:10, 10:40 and 11:40 a.m.; 12:40, 1:40, 2:40, 3:10, 3:40, 4:10 and 4:40 p.m.
    Discover how Ruby Bridges faced the unimaginable in a five-minute film that showcases aspects of her story.
  • Changemakers: Superhero in You in The Power of Children exhibit
    Times: Noon and 2 p.m.
    Become an everyday superhero and use your power to make a difference!
  • Voices of Hope: Live Theatre Performances in The Power of Children exhibit
    Time: 1 p.m.
    Discover how one inspiration child served as an example of overcoming discrimination and intolerance that made a positive difference in the world today.
